1st turbo solara finally got dyno

1st turbo solara finally got dyno

Postby Turbosolara » Sat May 08, 2004 9:43 pm

This turbo solara project had started since 2002......after spend lots of money and time, now i finally reach to the end.

Today i went to autolink at el monte to finish my dyno tunning on my e-manage. The tunner is "Dr. Charles" who was a former pro drag racer and he also was the head of tunner in the area51 and autolink. The car pulled 9 times of dyno (set up fuel map and boost) and had great improvement in the power curve (dyno chart i will upload once i found a scanner). I am very please with the result

here is the number
2000 5SFE Toyota Solara, 5 speed manual
60000 miles on the motor, 27000 miles on the turbo
91 octane
7Psi boost
stock clutch/flywheel

HP: 185HP
Torque: 187lb

If i remeber right, someone dynoed 5sfe with 110hp on the wheel, so i have 68% of power incresement. I think its not bad. If i run 9 or 10 psi, i should able to reach or break the 200HP. The tunner said the T3 turbo still overkill for LOW BOOST it only achieve 20% of its potential. After 10 psi i should able to see some mad power band.

Wow! Finally you got it dynoed. Nice gains there. what kind of turbo are you running? Who made that setup for you? I've always wondered how much your 5SFE is making, now we know! Kudos man.

I've always wondernig my power too. My turbo project is like long journey..... I first got my turbo from turbo-performance (at van nuys) which they promise as a "complete" kit. After i spend 3400 dollars get the kit installed and i show it to some hardcore car guys, they told me my kit is a POS. Because it's missing lots important stuffs such as fuel system upgrade and computer management. Also the oil pan leak oil bad (they massed it up, and i had them to fix them 5 times, still leak (should have use a brand new oil pan to avoid such problem).

Since my turbo 5sfe solara is the 1st in the world, i have no clue what's going on. I have to do my own research over mr2 and celica forums, or by asking some toyota pros. It is more diffcult than those old camry turbo project because solara have returnless fuel system and more complicate electrical system (such as igintion, A/F sensors). Sometimes i have to do trail and error to find a right part to fit into my car. For example, i brought 4 fuel pumps to fit it in (mr2, 240sx, eclipse, mustang), and i finally found mustang pump acutally fits.

After 3400 dollars, i spend another 750 dollars to modify my fuel system and install E-manage. After that, i found i also need to buy a eletrical boost controller so i spend another 500 to buy Greddy profect E-01. then i also spend additional money to buy turbo timer, EGT guage, Boost gauge, dual gauge pod, oil collector can, replace exhaust gasket, heat shield, fix oil leak, high flow fuel pump, fuel injectors. The project add up to more than 5000 dollars already!!!

on top of that, i still need to spend $500 to get dyno tunning to my car.

sorry for the long post, but i just want to vent

Another reason why I'm going with Ripp Mod's supercharger.

You spent alot out dough bro! To finaly end up with your gains is crazy! You could have already been over 200hp with the money you spent if you would have went with ripp's set-up. I guess you did your's before they even came up with the kit in the first place. Good luck with future gaines bro! Ripp got the same gains @ 5 psi. You could have been @ 300hp with all the dough you spent. Considering your the "first turbo 5s-fe" then I guess trial and error well spent. You can't change the past so it's all good. Keep up your work and go for your best performance!

I think the number they have is running with high octane and in cold condition. because i dont know how does that works that you boost 5psi and get 70% more power. I never hear such thing before. Has any other superchraged 5sfe run the dyno yet?

To have a complete custom reliable turbo system 5000-6000 is a right figure. so kids dont think power will come cheap

I thought my number is reasonable because it's close to 10% per psi.
Dyno number sometimes is not accurate. my friend who is the head tech of XS engineering for Rx-7. He dynoed his car mroe than 400 times (a blue 9 second 450HP if you have seen it). He told me that just by dyno the car at day time or night time, he can get up to 40HP difference. But using 100 octane and 91 octane, he can get up to 60HP difference)

EDIT: I just checked ripmod site and carefully read the description. The power they cliamed is horsepower on crank (they called drive wheel). it is different from the horsepowr on Wheel.

http://www.rippmods.com/products/produc ... oductId=99

Let's say I lost 20% of power because my old wearing facotry clutch, then thats means i have 222HP on the crank, with 7psi. If I lost 15% of horsepower because of my blessed power transfer, than thats means i have 212.75HP with 7 psi. With 9 psi i think i should be at about 230HP or more on the crank. Since the higher the boost, my turbo would response better because the optium boost is 14-18 to achieve full potential of the turbo.

Anyway, rippmod supercharger still a good choice for power because it is a already made and tested kit. you dont have to swear and do your own R&D. If you dont want to spend too much money and headache, go for ripmod charger. But all my headache were gone already, so now i just seat back and enjoy it.

cool! I did not realize your hp readings were at the wheel. Wow then that’s better. I know if I invest the amount of money you spent over to Ripp they can give 250 @ wheels w 9psi. But I am not here to talk about them. Your set up is awesome! You raised the bar for our engine and went beyond limits. You inspire and you ROCK!

It doesn't matter if its a SC or a Turbo, the boost is what makes the HP. The more boost (with the appropriate amount of fuel) the more power. 9 psi from Ripp won't make more HP than 9 psi from a Turbo.

Back calculating, the 4 cyl is making about 125 HP at the wheels with a 5 speed, since 7 psi of boost made 185 HP. 9 psi of boost will make 200 HP.

HP = (1 + (boost/14.7)) x stock HP

How much HP can the stock transmission take? I recall that the V-6 has a different transmission than the I-4
