I have a question about oil???

[b]My oil lite was coming on in my 99 solara, Only sometimes like when I come to a stop. So I checked the oil and it was low so. I put oil in but since I did it smokes when I start it (white smoke) after being off for awhile. Does anyone know why ? Did I put to much oil in ? Help!!

White vapor could be normal if it is only upon starting and goes away fairly quickly. If it is heavier white smoke, or steam that continues, suspect a bad head gasket. White with a blue tint usually indicates oil use, with your low oil level, this could be the problem. It would be a good idea to check under the front valve cover for sludge, a very common problem with this motor.

So you wont get white smoke (alot) from putting in to much oil? The wierd thing is that.. I only get the white smoke after driving some... Then after the car has been off for awhile. Not in the morning. Any info would be great................ thank you much

Not in the mornings????...I was guessing head gasket as well...but it aint smoking the mornings...intresting.

No too much oil i don't think causes white smoke! Tell us more about your cars' milage!

mine has been sitting for a while and has white smoke come out from the muffler for a few seconds after a few miles of driving then shutting off the engine, is that normal?

A few years ago a woman brought in a car because it was smoking like crazy and smelled really bad. She told me her husband worked swing shift and after work in the middle of the night, he changed the oil, but was surprised it took so much oil. He kept checking the dipstick and put in 8 quarts but still couldn't see the oil on the dipstick. She was sure this indicated something seriously wrong with the motor. So she brought it to me. The air filter was soaked with oil that came in through the PCV system, this oil was being pulled in the intake air and was burning and causing a lot of smoke out the tailpipe. I dropped the oil and found about 13 quarts of oil in the motor! Apparently he had forgotten to drain the oil first. So i just put back in 5 quarts and a new air filter after cleaning the air filter box and intake tube as best I could, and ran the car for a bit. No more smoking and everything fine. The woman was pissed at me saying I was a rip-off, she knew she didn't need a new air filter because it was replaced a couple months ago, I was a crook and a liar. She paid me the $35 I charged and drove off. So yeah, can get smoke from putting in too much oil, but it usually has to be a lot.

my 2 cent for the problem is.... probably your oil filter isn't tight enough and oil is coming out onto the exhaust? have you checked that?

I checked the oil today after putting in 2 qrts. and it's showing there is no oil ??

Step 1: Drain all the oil. Step 2: Replace pan plug. Do not remove filter. Step 3: Put in 4 quarts oil. Step 4: Wait 5 minutes and then check oil level. You know it MUST HAVE the right amount of oil. Therefore it MUST show on the dipstick or you have the wrong dipstick. It you have an automatic, be sure you are not checking the ATF level.

unless you forgot to put in the last step of adding 1 more qt after checking the dipstick.

Bad news: I went and got a oil change today and the guy there said he thinks it's my valves. I'm looking at $1,500 to fix it and 2 weeks Damn Damn.....Thank all of you for your help ~X0~
