Changing the Power Wire

Changing the Power Wire

Postby groovespacer » Thu Jun 03, 2004 11:19 pm

I would like to upgrade the power wire to a 4awg wire. I was wondering how I can get to the alternator to access this wire? There seem to be allot of crap between me and that wire, do I have to remove the air filter box to get to it? I found the ground wires very easy to replace, but the power is giving me problems. I looked in the Extending your cables in the DIY but I would like to change the entire wire rather than just extending it.

Are you going to upgrade your alternator? The reason I ask is that I am sure that Toyota sized the stock cable for the amp rating of the alternator. So if you are just using a stock alternator, I don't see what upgrading the gauge of the wire will accomplish?

It's for high draw stereo systems, and it will make a difference even w/ the stock alternator. I cant answer the question either though, I have a bunch of 4awg cable laying around and I've been meaning to do it. If I do figure it out I'll be sure to post it though.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.

Yes the hypothesis is that it will help your electrical system but there is still debate about it. The main reason I wanna do this is because my old battery died so I am thinking why not? I also go a new Optima Yellow Top. If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Just leave the factory wiring in place and add in a second wire. I used a dual post Optima red top. Factory wiring on the side posts and the aftermarket on the top posts...

Thanks ZX but my goal is to actually replace with a bigger gauge.
