99 SLE's...did they come in 5spd manual?

Postby Jon11582 » Fri Jun 11, 2004 11:33 am

Topic says it all. We apparently have one member who says he has one, but im thinking rebadge, since I dont think the SLEs came in 5spd

Then again, maybe the first year out, they were testing the waters, so they offered a 5spd as a special option on the SLEs. I really wish I had a 99 catalog to see if the 5spd was optional.

So what do you think? or what do you know that I dont?

This is a continuation of the discussion started here.

Please respond here so he can sell his Solara.

I see that my boyfriend has been here telling you guys that about my new 99 Solara and yes it is an SLE V6 5spd. These cars are out there I have now had two seperate Toyota dealers tell me this was an option and I have had the vin number ran as well to insure that this was true. It is not a re-badge. It was/is a factory option that has to be paid for. I will happily post pictures of the outside as well as the inside. Take some time out of your day and call a Toyota dealer or I will happily give you the names and numbers of the ones I have contacted. They definently come in a manual transmisssion.

intresting...never knew that...So you have climate control, dual power seats, the mysterious coin box (under the hvac controls) AND have a m/t?????

EDIT: i THINK i solved this mystery....My references above were for GEN 1 solara. Gen 1's SLE's came ONLY in v6 (ie. 1mz). Gen 2 solara's come badged SLE - but that does not automatically mean they are all SLE's are v6's (3mz). the i4 ones (2az) do come in M/t..and hence there are gen 2 SLE m/t (but its got to be i4 - as there aren't 3mz's with m/t). I don't know how the dude got gen 1 m/t SLE...there i think he is WRONG! AM i talking garbage...or can some of you comprehend what i just said..(its scarry the info one carries in their tiny brains)..... :o

Edit # 2: (My theory is flawed.....BOO bOO). - only m/t's are 2az engines..and NOT SLE's.

Showing some pics would be nice, since ur the only person who has a SLE in 5spd. Most dealers have no idea what the hell they are talkin about, they're just there to tell u what u want to hear.
Another thing...u said u have the gold emblems, it's probably the dealer that bought the wrong gold package for ur car and didn't tell u about it. That's probably what actually happened  Image

correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the V6 SLE's the only model that had the automatic climate control? That would be one way to tell if it is a re-badge. I've heard it's darn near impossible to put that sucker in if it didn't come that way from the factory.

Im not even sure if running the VIN tells you what trim and transmission it has. Just model, year and body style. Anyone run a VIN lately?

I'm solving this issue right here, right now!! I have all THREE dealer brochures from 99-01. Yes, these are the Toyota brochures you get in the showroom and they list the options/accessories you can get on a Solara. I looked and there is a big fat N/A on the SLE V6 for a 5 speed manual on all 3 years. Not Available... You can get the 5 speed on a SE V6, though. Looks like there are 2 kinds of automatic 4 speeds though-- one with ECT-i or some mess. The V config. gets the ECT-i type. No way some Toyota dealers got 5 speeds and charged MORE for them. I guess they could put a dealer markup market adjustment for the rare 5 speeds (SE's), but I doubt that would work in this case.
