PCV Valve

PCV Valve

Postby bassthrive » Tue May 25, 2004 1:22 pm

Im doing some routine 60k maintenance, including replacing the PCV valve on my V6. I was happy to hear it was an easy job after reading some posts about it, but after taking the plastic cover off the top of the engine, I cant find the damn thing! I took some pictures, maybe someone can cure my ignorance.

I've looked all around the top of the engine for something that looks like the new PCV I bought but with no luck.

PCV Valve

Postby jim@foreignaffairs » Tue May 25, 2004 2:20 pm

The PCV Valve is in the rear valve cover under the S/C on the passenger side. You can't replace it without removing the S/C.

Thanks Scott and Jim!
This thing was a joke to replace. Took me less than a minute from start to finish once I found the little bastard. I forget the post I read that said the engine cover needed to be removed, it definately does not.
Here are some pictures I took after I put the new PCV in - I may post these in the DIY section.

:::EDIT::: A closer look

I have a 2002 Solara SE (2AZ-FE). Has anybody replaced the PCV valve on this engine?

I posted a thread about it here but no one replied...

PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation. This is part of out emissions control system - it uses the engine's natural vacuum to air out the crankcase, pulling the nasty combination of gases that escapes past the piston rings into the intake stream to be burned. Called "blow-by," these gases are a combination of raw fuel, water vapor, oil fumes, and the byproducts of combustion. Not only does this stuff befoul the air we all breathe, it also contributes to the formation of sludge, varnish, and other troublesome deposits inside the engine. It behooves you to replace this $3.68 part.

It sure won't be much for a DIY :D, since it was a >1 min job.

Yeah its possible, but tight. Not nearly as impossible as say, changing your plugs.
