(copied from my answer to other thread)
gears grinding means worn synchronizerrs. Before dishing out anythingtry this: Use Pennzoil Synchromesh (also called and sold under GM Synchromesh), the concensus here at solaraguy likes redline. BOTH products are equally good. I'd try changing these than dishing out anything. Don't know how to do this yourself..then get a local shop to replace the fluid for you. (much cheaper) and a lot of people complaining abbout grinding usually APPRECIATE this product later...

HINT HINT: When's the last time you got your ATF and differential flushed.. Some people drain n fill (i did my drain n fill at 30K miles). at 60K miles, i'm planning a flush...so you might want to consider a complete flush..and fill those as desribed...

My 3rd gear has always been that way also. When in 3rd, if you put a little pressure on the shifter, it will vibrate pretty bad. I've only got 11k miles, so I'm pretty sure it's not wear. Must just be normal?

It may not be right, but based on responses it sounds like it is normal.

mine does it too. if im in third or fifth and i push up a little bit on the shifter while im putting on gas it vibrates. obviously its normal if everyone's does it including the guy that has only 11k on his car. Now if you are shifting into third with the clutch fully pressed and it grinds going into third yes you have a problem and should consider a drain and refill of MTF (i like mobil 1's full synthetic fluid). but this might not stop it because it might be the syncros.

did you even try the GM syncromesh or the redlines stuff. i say cus a LOT of celica people who have grinding gears use this..and are problemfree! I think a few people here use the redline product here....its cheaper to change the tranny fluid than replace the syncros...
