5th gear makes grinding noise

5th gear makes grinding noise

Postby that1mexguy » Tue Jun 15, 2004 6:50 am

Aight, i think i posted this before and got no replies, so i'll try this again...
As the title states, anytime i go from 4th to 5th gear, i have to pause for a second before going into gear because if i dont, then going into 5th gear makes a grinding noise. I've taken my car to a dealership and all they tell me is that i would have to leave my car overnight for a couple of days because the techs would need to take it apart to find out what's happening. If had all the money in the world to be crusin without a car, or to rent one i would, but my @$$ is broke and cant afford all that. Also, the guys at the dealership tell me that they are not even sure my warranty would cover that, and to fix it it would cost me over $1K. Have any f you guys experienced this before???? If so, did u get it fixed? what was it? is it worth getting fixed? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

gears grinding means worn synchronizerrs. Before dishing out the grand try this: Use Pennzoil Synchromesh (also called and sold under GM Synchromesh), the concensus here at solaraguy likes redline. BOTH products are equally good. I'd try changing these than dishing out 1grand. Don't know how to do this yourself..then get a local shop to replace the fluid for you. (much cheaper) and a lot of people complaining abbout grinding usually APPRECIATE this product later... :fadein:

ok, well i took my car to the toyota service shop... they looked at it and they determined that they will have to rebuild the transmission. According to the guy at the shop, 5th gear is gone. He called up the warranty people and they are sending some inspector tomorrow to make sure it's not "abuse" but like the guy told me, we are talking about 5th gear, not 1st, so pretty much not to worry about it. I'll only have to pay the $50 deductable... so pretty much, my car will be having surgery for a week. :drinking:

Well you'd have to check with your warranty people man, cause when I bought my car, 1.5 yr ago, i bought the extended warranty (an extra $500 i think-which is definitely paying off). I would suggest you to do the same, take your car to the dealership and have them take a look, and also have them call your insurance people to determine if they will cover it or not... heck, they are even getting me a rental LOL :drinking: cheers
