Tranny Dip stick question

Tranny Dip stick question

Postby Jai_Jai_Binks » Wed Sep 22, 2004 7:55 am

On the oil, i usually check for the level of oil and the color of the oil (golden = great, golden brown = time for change). However, what are the things to look for in a tranny dip stick. I ask, cus i check everything at every gas fill up, and in the past two times the tranny dip sticks not been completely red anymore. I did do a drain & fill approx 20K miles ago, and in another 8K miles i plan on doing my 60K service that would entail the tranny flush. Now, depending on the color, i may have to do it sooner. It shifts smoothly, and its not like i abuse the car (80% of the time i'm on cruise control). I don't peel off the stoplights..and take my time to reach posted speedlimits. I know i needed a new tranny on my ES (thankfully Lexus covered that as it was under 75K powertrain miles). But isn't 52K too early for a tranny flush, for a car thats only seen the highways (yeah, i bought my solara as a commuter car).

I did do the drain& filled at 34K., I'm at 52K on my odo. Thats approx 18K miles later....I'm planning on a flush once its 60K. Its just that there are tones of people who don't do more than an oil change...it just bothers me that my driving or upkeep could be be a culprit to my tranny predicament.

I would power flush every 30k. You should be safe with that interval, esp if you use a synthetic atf like amsoil or mobil 1. Put the dipstick against a sheet of white paper. Clean atf should be red to crimson. If it is brown or black its time to change it quick. (note: metal filings in the fluid mean big trouble and changing the fluid now may actually render the tranny useless because these filings are what is currently allowing it to spin.)
