5s-fe horsepower question

5s-fe horsepower question

Postby s e y t o n » Fri Nov 05, 2004 11:51 am

ive looked up a few dyno charts and whatnot, and i was wondering about redline and rpms after peak horsepower. basically, is our engine useless after 5400 rpm? what are optimal shift points? has anybody tried different rpms and got different 1/4 mile times? this has been bugging me for a while... just wondering.

thanks!

This is from my celica (which also was a 5sfe)
1st -> 2nd (5800)
2nd -> 3rd (5600)
3rd -> 4th (5600)
4th -> 5th (5600)

Shifting after 4400 but before 5400 would be what i suggest. Ours is what 135hp w/ 140tq, we aren't really gaining that much just revving that high after 5400...you got the spot RIGHT ON!

In my Celica I usually shift at around 5k, if I am pushing it. That seems too be about the right place to do it. Really there isn't point in pushing an economy motor harder than that, unless you have built up the motor.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

Officially, there shouldn't be any advantage. This topic has been beaten to death, search around. I run 93 Octane in the Solara which breaths very well, and 89 in the Celica that is still using a crappy paper air filter :).

You really shouldn't need 91 or 93 octane if your n/a! However, i do fill it in, the topic has been discussed till death here..and in the end, we all believe what we all believe, we never changed people's opinions. I fill 93 cus':
1. wifee doesn't know when to fill 97 and when to fill 93 (we drive different cars so we stick to one grade)
2. Its advisable to fill higher octane in winter months (but not many do)
3. I do get extra milage from the higher octane..

Yea, I agree its been beaten to death, but whats this with higher octane in the winter months? I thought it was better to get lower octane in the witner since what octane does is make gas less prone to combustion. In other words, what Ive heard is lower octane gas burns easier. The reason that lower octane is more prone to knocking is that its more likely to burn when the piston isnt fully compressed.

Whether thats true or not, I'm not sure, but since its cold in the winter months, wouldnt it be advisable to get something that burns easier?

I get 93 all the time in any case. Why? It was part of the deal when I parents chipped in for the car, and thier believers in high octane gas making the engine last longer. If it were up to me, I'd just get the cheap stuff. I dont think it really matters for these economy 4-bangers. No real reason it should knock unless its boosted.

In the initial part of the winterization, factories stop production of motor fuel for a while and start their production of heating oil. More than likely, the fuel that is distributed thru a jobbership (in terms of a rack pricing) then via gas stations is 2-4 months old. Sometimes more....In the summer time you can prob get by a lower grade of octane, but in the winter months, i insist on higher as i know..i work/facilitate the fuel industry!
