K&N drop-in filter...

Postby KRNguyW/aSOLARA » Sat Apr 30, 2005 12:26 am

Has anyone noticed any power gains/increased gas mileage from the K&N drop-in filters, on a stock or close to stock v6? I might wanna get one, but $50-60 aint cheap for me... Well, sorry if this ? has been asked, did a search and got craploads of results. thanks.

i agree. i had a CAI for a while, and then removed and sold it cuz i wasnt planning on doing anything else to the engine for a while. but then going back to stock sucked cuz i could feel the paper filter being so restrictive, and the acceleration was bogged down. then i installed the K&N filter (got it for only $10), and i must say i was thoroughly pleased with the difference it made. I would say about 70% of the power increase I felt with the CAI, I could feel with the filter (keep in mind, if you have an SC, the CAI will make a much bigger difference). I plan on taking the resonator off soon which should help a little more. My advice to all you guys out there, if your NA, you don't need a CAI. Save some $$ and stick with removing your resonator and getting the k&n filter. i agree it might not sound as deep or good as the true CAI, but performance wise, i think its about 80-90% as good, with less than 1/4 of the cost (if you get the filter brand new).

i know im bout to start a sh*tstorm in here, by the way, but im not tryin to hate, just giving an honest opinion from someone who's tried all the different options, so dont flame me

Stock air intake with resonators removed is not too bad. Should be able to find a K&N for $35 on the internet if you look.

it's not a HUGE gain, but it's something. With the ram air intake (INJEN) you lose some torque and gain only HP.

The KN adds a little torque (1-2, lol) and a little hp...

And it starts to work better as it gets dirty... lol at first it'll feel like a ram air intake. After that, once it's broken in, you'll feel the torque!

Is it easy or hard to remove the resonator? Any instructions on how to do it?

first u take off the screws for the driver side front wheel well, take the wheel well off, ull see a white Gallon looking thing (thats the resonator), just unbolt the two screws that hold it into place and remove it , drop it down and then remove it, cause the tire clearance wont let u move it twards u. and then u have a choice of either closing that port up or leaving i open like i did, i tried both ways, and i think leaving it open gives a better gain, then just put the wheel well back on and then screws back...done..ill take a pic of the resonator when i get back from work.
