Toyota says 60k with platinum plugs? Is this premature? Can I extend it to 90k and get it done when I get my timing belt done? Jon.

Well of course you probably could stretch it to 90K, but you may give up something in mileage and performance. My father used to complain that at 45K the platinum plugs in his 86 Celica GTS would start to loose their edge. Its up to you though.......... 8)

Jon, 60k is recommended. Some people get away with 100k but I always go 70-80k on a tune up. Great time for the belts to be changed at the same time.

I hope you didn't mean that you are going to wait till 90k miles to get your timing belt done. Toyotas are great cars, but stick to their maintence schedule somewhat. As flipside said shoot for the 70k range, and if you change them a little sooner it can't hurt.

You should change your plugs at 60k. Other wise you will lose performance and gas milage. When is the timing belt suppossed to be changed? I thought toyota says 100k

Timing Belts

Postby JMSinMaryland » Mon Dec 09, 2002 11:03 am

Toyota says 90k for timing belt and 60k for plugs, with the S/C being such a pain to work with I want to get them done both at the same time. Mechanics have told me dealer recommended is always too short so I was thinking 90k do both, but I might do 70k both? or have the dealership worry about it and follow the 60/90k schedule. Jon. btw are there any 90k plugs we can use on our cars?

You could go with denso iridiums which are 120k miles, but with a supercharger you should be using them already

Also you have to remember if you are supercharged there is a lot more stress on all your parts, earlier maintence can be a very good thing. I wouldn't push the limit

Location of sparkplugs

Postby Guest » Thu Jan 02, 2003 8:50 pm

V6 Solara SE Automatic

I was wondering where the spark plugs are located. This is a pretty dumb question, but I have no idea. As soon as you open up the hood, are they the three little boxes in front of the small plastic engine cover? If those are the front plugs where are the rear plugs? Are the rear plugs in front of or under the intake manifold??? Are they somewhere under the plastic engine cover. If anyone has diagrams or something I really need some help because I want to learn to do it myself. I tried using the search function, but didn't find anything, sorry if it's already here somewhere. Thanks a lot in advance!

The spark plugs are located on the front bank... the three boxes you see with plug wires leading from them are the first set of 3 plugs. The rear plugs are underneath the intake plenum. It's accessible by hand with extensions and u joints. It's not necessary to remove the black plastic cover to access the plugs.

I just replaced my spark plugs today and I have a little over 66,000 miles. They actually looked pretty good, though they did need to be changed. You could easily stretch it out to 90,000 if you want but anywhere between 60k & 70k seems like a good time.

Ok, shopping for plugs - going in circles - need help.

A 3.0L V6 (no supercharger) requires platinum plugs according to the sticker on the underside of my hood. Easy enough...

When I go to www.sparkplugs.com I see several types -
1) single platinum
2) double platinum
3) multi ground plug (denso pk20)
4) iridium (denso sk20)

Iridiums are way too expensive so f all that silent bob.

Brands include Autolite, Champion, Denso, NGK and Splitfire with significantly different prices. Are all brands created equal?

for your reference...
