Talk about aftermarket Toyota Solara Gen 1-1.5 upgrades.

Have u checked your rotors lately? (Uneven surface, too worn, uneven wear on brake pads?)

Brembo BLANKS that is. Lol

First time doing rotors on the Solara. Man, the two bolts in the back (Size 17m socket) was a Bizatch to get off! Had to look for a pipe.

Haven't test driven the car far yet. Only moved it in the backyard, but already it feels like it has hell alot more BITE and firmer brake pedal. But I'll see... (no insurance on the car for now till Monday. ;) )

Please read the captions below each pic.

Here's STOCK. notice the rusted caliper?

This is the OLD rotor. The "outside" (facing outward away from the car) looks to have worn evenly... but...

Image
this is the back of the other. Worned out WIERD looking. And I noticed my brake pades has some bad grooves "cut into them"...

Image
here's the other rotor. Same thing almost... My question. Is this normal for the back sides of rotors.

Edit: The egdes of teh worn rotors. Its not chipped or nething. The camera makes it look as though there is an ANGLE to the rusted looking parts of the rotor. The rotors are actually completly flush/flat.

My car info:
2000 Solara
about 34,000 miles (Does rotors last this long?)

reason for changing them. Noticed rotor "pulsates" when breaking at speeds over 40mph.
I'm kinda a noob~

Smart move with the blanks. Those holes and slots can easily seduce. I just replaced all four corners with brembo blanks. My old rotors looked just like yours, except the grooves werent that noticeable, but lots of crusty rust!

PS - I was shocked to see how fast my brembos started rusting after installing them. Damn this florida humidity. I pulled all the brembos again last week, cleaned as much rust off as i could, taped off the friction surfaces and hit it with 3 coats of high temp paint. Removed my calipers and painted them as well. Everything is a pretty now and should stay that way for a long time.

Hey nice job! Im planning on painting my calipers when i get my brembos. Except i want slotted rotors. What type of paint did you use and where did you get it. Im debating between black or silver. Havent decided yet. And did take them off the car and paint them? Also did you replace your pads doing all of this?

THEY SELL A CALIPER PAINT KIT IN AUTO PART STORES..I BELIEVE IT CONSISTS OF EPOXY PAINT WHICH IS A GLUE LIKE PAINT THAT DRIES REALLY HARD AND STANDS UP TO TEMPS AND IMPACTS (PEPPLES AND SUCH)

I agree, I wish they rustproofed the non-contact surface of the rotors. Edges of mine and the center around the hub are starting to rust and pieces chipping off the edge., but at least the rotor surface is still near-perfect

Yeah it sucks. You pay a premium for these rotors only to end up with orange hubs a few days after installing them. I even contacted brembo and let them know how unhappy I was.

brembo lady wrote:Although all rotors are coated with an anti rust coating at the time of packaging, the shelf life of this coating can not be determined with any type of life expectancy. Depending on their region, the humidity, and the other elements involved, rusting will occur with all metallurgies regardless of the manufacturer.

The fit and function that the rotor was produced for should be completely intact

This rust inhibitor comes off as soon as you prep the rotor with brakleen.

You can paint or powdercoat the areas which will not make contact with the pads. Powdercoat will be a little tougher. Powdercoat goes on as a liquid with heavy powder mixed in. It is then heated until the powder melts and becomes uniform. Paint is a little safer, because overspray will be wiped out almost instantly by the brake pads the first time you step on the brakes (make sure you don't drive on a public road until your sure the paint is wiped away and the brakes are good to go). I would suggest using your old pads to clear the paint, then install your new pads, otherwise the new pads might "glaze."

How are the Brembo blanks better than regular Toyota rotors?

I got drilled zinc coated Brembos off of Ebay. The zinc coating is supposed to prevent rust in the non-wear areas. We'll see. It's been a few weeks now and so far no rust. The only b*tch is that the organic/ceramic brake pads I installed throw a lot of black dust. I'm cleaning my rims much more now.

The brembo blanks will just warp again in no time.

Why did the rotors warp? Because the car is too heavy and the rotors are too small. They overheat too easily.

Brembo blanks are not better than OEM Toyota ones. It's pointless if you are paying a similar price for them.
