Supra engine in Gen1 Solara?

Supra engine in Gen1 Solara?

Postby Dimik » Tue Dec 06, 2005 11:34 am

Does anybody have a Supra engine in their solara, some guys say it might be a good idea to do the engine swap with Supra's..
What do you think?
What extra parts would i need if i swapped my engine with Supra, any clue?
Thanks :drinking:

Haa! I had a dream about that last night!!! Yes, my life is that pathetic. :(

Anyway, to your question, I think the engine is too long, but I could be wrong.

Dear Dimik, this is my dream swap. It has been done in the Streetglow and Lucas Oil Solaras, but no daily drive Solara is being pushed around by a 2JZ-G(T)E engine.

It will not work without a good deal of money for several reasons.

The basic ones are this.

1) The Solara's 1MZ is a V6, whereas the Supras 2JZ is an I6. The inline formation of the cylinders means the engine won't fit in the engine bay perpendicular to the wheels to be used as a front wheel drive engine. This means your car would need to be converted to RWD, and considering the need to replace a dead rear axle with a differential rear axle, most likely from an actual Supra, which I assume would be a difficult retrofit (I have no idea though) the rebuilding logistics of it just aren't there.

2) Engine mounts.

3) Wiring harnesses.

4) I'm guessing a good reconfiguration/location of near everything in your engine bay as it'll more than likely need to be set up like a Supra.

5) Transmission.

6) It will cost you a pretty penny to find a good 2JZ in the first place, much less someone who will do the swap for you at a good price.

If you have the money, and get past numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 let us know.

Not gonna happen. For what you spend on it, you can buy yourself a nice supra and honestly not to hate but supras are the shizzy compared to solaras. Not worth the money or the time. Plus the whole RWD conversion thing would just get out of hand

I'm sorry to say this so boldly ...

If you have to ask what it takes, then you shouldn't attempt it. Start with swapping like engines first. A V-6 in place of the 4 cyl. A 3.3L for the 3.0L. You get the idea.

Once you start getting into engines that were never mated to that chassis, then all sorts of complications and heartbreaks start coming. Avoid swaps like the plague unless you have lots of time and money. I say this from experience. (I'm fitting a VQ35 in place of my VG30T in my 88 300ZX Turbo)

Someone could get a 3S-GTE and build it up fully, from what I heard there are GTE's lurking with 720hp (i.e. the Top Secret Supra) out there and probably have a car that is quicker (i.e. weight of engine) and cheaper. Jon.

that's sweet that your swaping a vq35 motor into your 300zx.
as Phreakdout said it. you gotta know what your doing. what parts are needed. unless you got a butt load of money to pay someone to do it. that's another good idea to get it done. doing a rwd swap isn't easy you gotta have the tranny, drivetrain, axles, etc...
