fast solara

yup its not reall the size of the rim that matters, u can have 17s with tires that have a smaller sidewall, causing the overall diameter to be smaller, so your speedo says you are going faster than you really are. i read somewhere that with the tsw revos and standard tires, the overall diameter is smaller than stock 16s, so when your speedo says 60, u might be at 56-57. not a huge deal though

They match up to almost the exact same height. The difference is minimal and would be similar to comparing two stock rims, one with brand new tires, one with bald tires.

Also if it is off at all you'd be going 59 when it says 60, but there is somewhere around a 2% tolerance for error in the speedometer

Do the math...

Postby ttreat » Fri Jun 20, 2003 9:12 am

Sorry Yanks, but they are not the same. Stock tires and rims are 205/60/R16 which have an overall diameter of 652.4 mm. If you have the TRD rims or TSW Revos with 225/45/R17 tires the overall diameter is 634.3 mm. That is 18.1 mm difference. So if one car has bald tires and the other has new tires the tread depth would be nearly 3/8 in. That's even deeper than the Michelin LTX ATs on my 4wd T100. The difference between stock and the TRD setup is 2.85% so technically anyone that is running a setup similar to the TRD setup is limited to about 132 mph (not really a big difference).

back on topic.....

IMHO fast doesn't mean top speed. fast means low 1/4 mile/0-60 times, aka acceleration.
besides, top speed can be adjusted.

I've done 110 in mine ... didn't feel like going any faster 8) It was on the stretch of I-76 between I-80 and Denver.

Very good point. With the top speed being governed on most cars these days, it is almost a meaningless statistic.

Ericsol, I must see that! I bet it's cool as heck LOL.

Anyway I think top speed is important, but not so much as a measure of the cars power, but as a measure of the driver’s ability to keep his or her wits, not to mention suspension stability. Just my .02 :).
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

Do you mean like when I came up on a left handed sweeper at 150 and didn't lift?
