Front brake pads and rotors...

Front brake pads and rotors...

Postby Fenix » Wed Aug 13, 2003 9:00 am

Hi guys,

I dropped off my car this morning for an oil changed & tire rotation at my local Toyota dealership.

Moment ago, a technical guy called me informing that my front brake pads are down to 10% and I need to replace them ASAP. He also mentioned that the rotors need to be rounded up as well.

The total cost for brake pads + rotors services = $275 plus tax.

What do you guys think about the price?

I told him not to do it because i will take care of it myself.

The thing annoys me is I always take my car to that dealership's shop since I bought the car there.
Last time (3 months ago) during an oil change, they said I needed to change the battery, and nothing about the brake. (i didn't change the battery, and now it's ok, wtf?)
Now only 3 months and 2500 miles later, the fricking brake pads are down to 10%, and the rotors needed to be serviced?

My car has 34k miles, and is 2000 SE V6.

I'm about to question my dealership's shop...

I can take care of changing the brake pads. However, do you guys think do I really need to have my rotors services?

Thanks.

I got the same thing, but ended up DIY. :D

1st order the brake pads asap.
It's up to you which pads u r going to use,
I use Axxis Ultimate and it's awesome. some use KVR, EBC, etc.
I got one for $45 a pair for both front from eBay.

2nd, get your rotor turned. It's only cost abt $15-20 per Rotor at PepBoys.
So total is $40.

Total: $100 < and my brake is more solid than ever.

It's also good to get a SS Brake lines, but so far I have not found a good deal yet.

New blank rotors don't cost much too.

Machined rotors will warp easier than new rotor due to the smaller overall surface.

I got a set of Hawk HPS front pads and I love them, although I do prefer big brake kit hahaha

Anyways, make sure you have impact tools to loosen the bolts on brake parts. Those bolts are usually seized.

Thanks Happy_Aggies and ImpactX for your suggestions. I'm really appreciated.

Happy_Aggies, is this what you bought from ebay:

I might buy the whole new set of rotors below in Ebay:

Thanks.

The price sounds about right. Midas charges the same price for rotor and brake pad replacement/service with labor (around $260 tax already included). But I think in Midas you only have to pay that much the first time you bring in your car, pads I think are lifetime and you only pay for labor next time you need new pads.

You have 34k miles and 10% left of your brake pads? Do you race? Do you speed up to red-lights? I had 20% of my pads left at 40k miles, I decided to get new pads even though I had 20% left, just to be on the safe side.

the price sounds right. i assume its for new pads, machining rotors, and adjusting rears.
cutting the rotors is fine, and no, it does not cut down on overall surface area.
10% left @34K is not abnormal. i've seen 5% @20K.

if you really wanna push it, call them back, explain what you said above about being there not long ago and no mention of brakes. also remind them that you ONLY bring it there. if you push the right buttons, they may just warranty them for you.

good luck

I use the Axxis Ultimate something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 2427176112

E-mail the seller he may have some for Solara.

Axxis Metal Master is good as well, but the Ultimate is race proven.
A bit of dust brake tho.

You can compare the difference in technical section.

And yes c2g, it feels solid all the way from cold to hard braking w/ no fade. 8)

Thank everyone for helping. I know I always could count on this wonderful board.

I don't drive my Solara much, only for the weekends around town, most of the miles I got on it was because I drove up to Boston several times last year.

Besides the fact that I sometimes push it hard especially behind the red line when seeing some ricers (I wouldn't call it racing anyway), I mostly drive it very gently.

So when I heard my front pads were down to 10%, I was like "huh"... :D

Once again, thanks everyone for helping.

Happy_Aggies, I really appreciated your help. I've already emailed the seller about the Ultimate Axxis pads, hopefully he gets some left. Thanks.
