Any regrets? Would you do it again?

OK, my 2 cents as well...

> Do any of you have regrets owning a Toyota Solara?

NONE. In fact, my next car (100,000 miles later, hopefully) will be a Solara, though hopefully by that time I'll have a wife and kids, and having a coupe might be difficult in terms of cargo space, kiddie entry/exit, etc. We'll see.

But no regrets. It's an uncommon car (only 40,000 made a year now, the most being just over 60,000 during the first year) so it's relatively unique.

> Considering only performance and reliability, would you buy a Solara again?

YES. Probably will get the 4-cylinder stick next time, for kicks.

The Solara is reliable. It's Camry in 2-door disguise. When I was initially thinking of cars, I considered the Corolla, Celica, Integra, Altima...but coming from a family with 2 100,000+ Camrys, and being in a job where I needed a dependable car, it made total sense.

> Have you had reoccuring problems with your car?

Nope.

The only improvement in retrospect would have been a better set of tires. The 15" stock tires, Bridgestone Potenza RE92's, are infamous for being a lousy set of rubber. I plan to put on Dunlop Sport A2's next. But it hasn't been a factor causing major disappointment.

I say go for it, get the Solara!

Hard for me to say with just over 1300 Kms on a new 2002 - I have nothing but good things to say... a nice balance with few sacrifices. No problems to date - smooth and solid. No buyers remorse here and i would have no problems recommending this gerneration Solara. I just can't get past the styling of the '04..but if its you - then I think you will be happy :bday:

Ummm...nope, I luv my baby. As much as sometimes I think maybe I should have gotten a different car or want a new one...I can never actually find a car better that I would actually buy.

If they released a solara w/ styling I liked I would buy a new one in a HEARTBEAT!

Ahhh..just stupid stuff...my car just hates me..but as much as it does, it has yet to leave me stranded...(even when it died in the middle of the road randomly and then never did it again ;))

With 46.5k on my Solara I average 25-27 MPG around town. On long trips you can bump that up to 31-33 MPG.

Sole defect to date: inop electric window (driver's side) control switch (R/R under warranty)

The dealer gets $20 for oil/filter change (plus they wash the car)

I'm with DavPac on the 5-speed manual shift. If you like the auto, you could do a lot worse........

The suspension - I understand - for 2004 has been beefed up to accomodate more aggressive driving. The weak (permissive) suspension on my 2000 SE-V6 is the one area of concern for me.

FWIW: CarsDirect.com seems to be offering an SE-V6 Sport Coupe at(compared to what I paid) a reasonably fair price..................best, ez

Well, putting aside the new design of the 2004, seems like the consensus is to sign on the dotted line!

This time Tuesday I'll be a 2004 Solara SLE owner!

Just an observation: It seems many of you either love the redesigned 2004 or you hate the new design. Not many are in the middle. I'll admit, when I first saw pictures of the 04 I had my doubts. But after seeing one in person (and don't throw tomatoes at me when I say this), I think it looks better than any previous model Solaras. Don't get me wrong; all Solaras are sweet to look at inside and out, but I think this new design is tad (just a tad, a thin hair) more elegant in a sporty, sophisticated way.

Thank you, everyone, for your comments. I truly value your opinions.

Same with me! But you can't compare a Gen 1 and Gen 2 Solara... they are both in their own class =P (Just like the old Soarer and the new... no comparison)

Nope! Very satisfied. My ex-girlfriend leased one (she loved driving mine), and my present love interest is thinking about buying something Toyota (probably a Tundra), because of how well the Solara drives. She currently drives an Isuzu Oasis van (a Honda Odyssey in disguise), so that would be a definite upgrade!

By the way, the K&N air filter and the Denso Iridium plugs are well worth the price. Rock on!

Colorado,

Thanks for the feedback! I've heard great things about the K&N air filters regarding how they improve performance and mileage, but I'm not familiar with the Denso Iridium plugs. Do they basically enhance the air filter's performance and mileage? If so, what improvements have you noticed since you installed these upgrades?

Thanks!
