WIndsheild

WIndsheild

Hey all,
I'm not happy with this..... but I was driving my 2002 Solara enjoying the smooth ride at 80mph and a rock kicks up and hits my windsheild. It left a small impression which while i continued driving grew into a crack and now looks like two thunderbolts streching across the passenger side. I have insurance so im not worried about cost but i am worried about the replacement of a new windsheild. Filling it with Resin is not an option cause the crack is longer than 6 inches and I've read some facts about how the factory seal can not be duplicated and there is chance of leakage not to mention something about airbag deployment if the window is not replaced properly or even structural integrity. I don't have a choice but to replace the windsheild or drive with it cracked like a sucker. But if someone can offer some advice or info before i get it fixed that would sweeet. So far i plan on going to the dealer to have them replace it but they said they would contract it out to a third party to do the work cause they don't have a glaser on the premises.

that totally sux..I think your only option is really to get it replaced, the crack will only get larger over time.

Yup, that does suck... I wouldn't worry about it, just get it replaced. Just check around (ask other people and shops, not insurance companies) for a very good quality glass shop in your area. The windshields are just as good and a good shop will do a good install.

I was pulling onto a highway and a dump truck went by and threw up a big rock and smashed my windshield. I had it replaced and it's been fine, can't tell. I'm just glad it didn't hit anywhere else. My wife had a Honda Civic that had the windshield broke a long time ago and we took it to the shop that the Insurance company recommended and what a MESS! It leaked, the trim was put on very sloppy, they has some stuff they put to seal it globbed everywhere. The insurance company made them fix it. They fixed the leak but it still looked like crap... -JoeB

Just a word of advise to ANYONE who reads this. If you see a small crack in the windshield...for immediate concerns just clen that surface and apply CLEAR NAIL POLISH over the chip/crack. You might want to repeat applying this everytime you wash the car. It might be a ghetto way to prevent further cracking, but its effective. Obviously, if the crack is small you might want to stop at those windshield repair shops and get it filled in nicely. But personal exp, the nail polish works great (and you still keep your factory seals!).

guest guest, where do you come from???
its good to know the location. it enables us to serve you better guest,
so please please please, sign in..

going to the topic.

1. dont panic: i had my ws replaced 10 days back.
before you do anything ask your insurance company if they have a special auto glass deductible, usually $100.. if not, proceed below

2 you have following options
a) go to your toyota dealer if you feel like paying him 400$ extra so that he can take his kids for a mini vacation on your money.
b) if you dont feel generous, note the OEM of your ws. mostly its ppg for solara. then go to http://www.allstarglass.net if you are in cali or http://www.ppgprostars.com to find a local ppg installer.

now for the good news, the installtion for an OEM glass with new seal cost me 213$. the toyota dealer was quoting me 550 + tax :evilbat:

insist on euthrane sealent and NEW SEAL.

thank me once done! :bday:

hey all,
yes im finally a member, just to note i live in NY.
But i do have full glass coverage and there is no deductible and so far i've found out that the dealer will charge:

$175.00 for the glaser to come and intall the window at the shop &
$440.00 for the cost of the toyota windsheild that comes out to....
$615.00 total. The price for seeing my ride cracked.....
UPSETTING!

Now i have to find out how much exactly the insurance company is willing to shell out, even with full glass coverage they will only pay a certain amount. Go figure! The insurance company has offered me they're own shop which i can go to. But im hesitant because the car is just a year old and i dont want some rinky dink shop that has an agreement with Allstate to use crap sealants or second hand glass and weather stripping to replace the broken one windsheild. I really want a professional quality job!
Any suggestions,

Just get it replaced, my last car ('99 Camry) had 4 windshields total, it was suseptible to getting cracks for some reason. Each time it was replaced with Toyota windshields.

BigDawg, that's interesting. I use State Farm insurance and have a windshield clause in my policy. When my windshield broke, I never paid a dime and had a guy come to my house and do a very good quality replacement. I've been driving around with the replacement windshield for 2 years and can't tell it was ever replaced. I have a deductible for normal things but windshields are handled special. They did say if I started having windshields replaced very frequently, it would negate that coverage. -JoeB

as long as you stick to the original company (mostly ppg) and make sure they replace the seal you shud be ok.

I'm just curious as to where the question of structural integrity came from. I don't know of any vehicle that relies on the windshield for any type of support. It just sits there in its channel and keeps the bugs out of your face. I have a small chip in mine that happened less than two weeks after picking up my car. I will get around to replacing it sometime but it hasn't bothered me enough in 4 years to do it.
I also know that State Farm will try to "Repair" it and I'm not going for it. I just got a star shaped crack in the windshield of my Del Sol and they tried to fix it. When I saw the star still in it when they got done the respone was " This will stop it from spreading" Well thats all fine and dandy but IT'S STILL CRACKED! So they sent out a new windshield the next day. Well sorry about my ranting but that whole fix it thing they tried just bothered me.

The fix it thing is just sucking out the air and sealing it shut. They can't make a crack go away...all they can do is keep it from spreading. I had a small crack on my celica...when i didn't think about it too much, it webbed out to 2 inches long...i went to those windhield repair tents and they sealed it. Was great for two years till i sold it! Didn't spread.
