idle rpms are jumpy

idle rpms are jumpy

Postby bash0 » Sat Nov 01, 2003 9:32 pm

I recently purchased my solara with 75,000 miles and the engine is now starting to act up at idle. Last night was the worst when the engine would start at 800rpm drop to 600, back to 800, drop to 500 almost killing it and then jumping back to 800-1000. This cycle repeated about 5 times before I turned her off. I have also noticed the droping to 500 and kicking back up to normal idle rpms while out and about and stopped at a light. Is this simply a timing issue that will be resolved when i replace the timing belt, or do i have some serious issues to reckon with?

Hey mine did do that,
It all started after I put a new pulley on my S/C, I thought it was 6 but I think it was really 7.5psi. I measured the pulley and it was only 3 inches wide.
Any way after i put the pulley on the rpms would go all over the place just like you said.
One time I was sitting at a red light moving my wheels side to side and my car just stalled on me.
Later down the road , I had a cracked piston and a compression leak in another cyclinder.
I think the company that I bought the pulley from sent me the wrong one.
Pully boys .com Realy nice people but wrong pulley , Car go BOOM.
I have my boost gauge hooked up but not through the S/C , so w/ 4 psi on the gauge reads 2.5 maxpsi and when I had the 6 psi ( well I thought it was a 6) the gauge would read 6.
So my question was why would it read 6 witha 6 but 2.5 with a 4 ?
My answer is I had the wrong pully on there.

for normal start up, i do not understand why it would bounce from 800 to 600 rpm. did you install something to disrupt the ecu process?

as for chef, the reason why your car died was b/c of that pulley. did you reset the ecu after the install of the new pulley?

Look at your air / fuel system. Are all the filters clean? Also, has it been tuned up yet? If you bought it at 75k, do you know if the 60k maintenance was done? Which motor do you have?

I have a bit of a wandering idle in my car also, but I am pretty sure it’s an air / fuel thing. Because it started after I got my throttle body back from the machine shop  .

Might want to clean your idle sensor too. I had a link on how to do this, I’ll look around for it later.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

Mine is the V6, no tune up that I know of, and what should have been done at 60k?

The 60,000-mile maintenance includes everything pretty much (Plugs, Filters, Valve Clearance, Fluids etc.)

I would take a look at your plugs, and see if your air filter is really dirty. If the plugs are toast, or the filter is clogged then it probably wasn't done. You can check these things for free, and are listed as causes of what your describing in the Haynes manual :).

There are some other things too, but those are things your dealer would probably need to test, worn camshaft lobes, leaking EGRs, and some of the other things Haynes list are a little to involved for me to mess with at least. The timing belt is on the Haynes trouble-shooting list also for erratic idle, so maybe you'll get lucky and that's all it is :).

I had the same exact problem... You need to clean your throtte body with some carb cleaner. After I did this, I got no more weird idling. Check this link on how to clean your throttle body: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenan ... ttle_body/

enjoy!

I wish someone told me this info above when I was having the same problem :D

A motor is a motor. The same basic ideas apply. Our throttle body is slightly different in shape (I think), but giving it a good cleaning won't hurt anything :D. My Toyota dealer offers a throttle body cleaning as part of the 60k service package.

Maybe it's your Idle Air Control Valve. Camrys have this problem often. It's expensive too, it cost me $380 at Toyota.
