out of alignment, camber problem and metal fatigue

Howdy gents,
Wanted to see if anyone has had this issue w/ their solara.

Went to have the TRD struts and springs put in today. Almost done and the guy calls me to ask if I want a camber kit installed. He says he can't do the alignment without it.

So, I knew the car was out of alignment b/c i was unevenly burning rubber on the front wheels. I also knew the camber came fixed on the camry/solara platform. But I didn't know it wasn't adjustable. Stupid kit is going to cost me ~$35 + $35/wheel to get installed.

Has anyone else had this problem? The guy at the shop said it was due to metal fatigue in the spindle set.

Thanks,
bkp_duke

the camber and toe are totally adjustable. its like having a steering wheel that doesn't turn.

you dont necessarily need the kit whatever that guy is selling to you. perhaps the kit will be able to help adjust more of what the stock correction may hold. the car will still be able to go through an alignment regardless.

Just got off the phone with the local Toyota dealer. Their service dept. said the camber kit is required only in conditions where the camber is out so much that a normal adjustment won't correct it.

Just my luck. :(

It shouldnt have gone that much out of camber... Most of our solaras on the forum dont need camber kits... should be fine with an alignment... if the dealers wont do it... take it elsewhere

The same thing happened to mine after it was lowered. The alignment was so far off that they had to put on camber plates.....but then again, they also said that 17+ inch rims wouldn't fit because of that.....So maybe they are just clueless.

I too had this sort of alignment problem with my solara. I went in to get it aligned and the shop said that the car was so far out of alignment that there was actually no aftermarket part to fix it (Hard to believe) . So what the guy did was shave some fitting down to acess the correct alignment. That cost an extra 50 bucks and now it is fine. I guess he maybe had to do that b/c i have 18 inch rims.

See, normally Solara don't need a camber kit; but maybe in you case you might be needing it? I hope the shop yout taking to is reputed for their lowerings on toyota? (or has exp. with lowering toyota's before). Tspoon (david on celica.net) didn't get a camber kit on his celica when he lowered it...it now seems that he needs it...so talk around and learn what others did..and where they got their stuff take care of.....

i had to get my camber corrected a long time ago. probably cuz of the trd springs..anyways somtimes it is necesary, unless you want uneven tire wear.
