okay i bought a non name brand alarm system and i took it to the shop to install it and the guy told me that the auto starter will screw up my engine and then he told me to get one of his alarm systems but the thing was the alarm system he has i never heard of either... so the question is will non name brand alarm systems with auto starter really mess up the engine? and how can u tell if an alarm sytem is good just by looking at it, cuz he just barely looked at my alarm and told me to buy his.

uh there should only be a few things that are visible in an alarm system, like the transmitter and maybe the remote, or the siren, but what else is there? sounds fishy is the guy looked real quick and quickly wanted you to buy the one hes selling. a good place will tell you first, then try to help fix the problem, not sell you something else so quick.

no name alarm brands are okay. they will just crap out. but THEY WILL NOT SCREW UP THE ENGINE. you could take a high premium DEI manufactured alarm and things could go wrong, but in the worse case, it won't mess up your engine. it all depends on who installs the product, too.

ANY alarm has a starter kill output, but it has nothing to do with the engine, fuel line, or the starter itself. many people think it does, but that is not the case.

the starter kill input interfaces with a relay that is wired in-line with the starter WIRE. the starter wire (located in the ignition harness) is cut in half and a relay is wired between the connections. normally, this is one of the few installation procedures which the technician MUST cut a wire in half.

if the installer is saying that it will "screw up your engine" he's only bullshitting you into buying one of his crappy alarms. go with a DEI product such as Viper, Clifford, or Sidewinder.

i've seen cars starting out of the blue, all by themselves.
i've also seen remote starters try starting the car when its already on!

electrical shtuff is weird when things malfuntion. stick with good name brands with warranties (parts and labor) and you'll be fine.

okay i take my previous comment back. GET A NAME BRAND ALARM. the only 4 reputable ones out right now would be:
Autopage RS-750
DEI's Viper 790/791XV
Clifford Matrix
CompuSTAR 2WSS

though i don't know of anyone who's got the CompuSTAR one. you may be the "guinea pig" if you get that one...

i have a cheap-o one installed in my 2000 camry and everything is fine the only prob. is that the reset buttom is toward the bottom next to the acc. pedal and by mistake i push it so basically i just have to relocate it, but that has nothing to do with the alarm....the auto starter and everything is kick ass, it has good range aswell

car alarm

Postby Solara916 » Fri Feb 20, 2004 4:24 pm

I just bought new rims for my car, and I felt it would be smart for me to get an alarm. My 00 Solara came with a factory keyless entry system with a panic button that I am guessing works off the horn.

I purchased a Black Widow (not sure what model) from Best Buy, and I bought a Clifford Arrow5 from Hi Fi Magnolia. There is about a $30 dollar difference, which isn't much, but I was planning on buying that thing that goes from your brake pedal to the floor (kinda like The Club, but goes on a different part of the car). That thing is ilke $40-$50.

I want to know if there is any real difference between the two alarms. The install guy at Hi Fi said that the features were about the same on the two alarms, but on the Clifford, the wires are more conspicuous, and the way they install the system makes it harder to figure out if someone is trying to bypass the alarm.

I kinda don't want to get jipped paying extra for an alarm that is going to do the exact same thing as the cheaper one.

I'd really appreciate some feedback.

Thank's in advance.
