Possible Problem?

Today i was driving on the freeway during rush hour. some a**hole cut in front of the driver in front of me so he had to slam on his brakes, which in turn caused me to slam on mine. I stopped all right cept i felt that my brakes locked up for a bit or watever...then after i gave my car gas and it seemed like it dropped into neutral for a few seconds and the engine just reved. But after a second or two it ran fine again. Has this happened to anyone else and could this be a problem? BTW i have a 2000 SE

hmm. i doubt this is a problem, since 2 others besides you (SolaraStar) have expirenced a similar situation.

it may be a preventive measure just in case you hit the gas in panic? who knows...

do you all have ABS ?

Pretty sure its the ABS. Kind of feels like the brake pedal is fighting back at you. Its most noticible when its slippery, but can happen under hard braking if its dry too. It activates when the wheels thinks its about to lose traction. It kind of feels like its locking up, but its preventing your brakes from locking so you dont loose traction with the road and sliding into whatever your stopping for. I cant explain that neutral thing though.

I also have a 2000 SE. I got ABS on mine. I dont think it was standard, but the only options I got is the package with the 15" rims and sunroof. ABS may have been in the package with that.

I think this is normal for Camry/Solara auto tranny. It just can't figure out what you wanted to do fast enough - you were on the gas while driving, then when braking in a panic situation you let go off the gas abruptly and completely, then slammed it again quickly - the tranny needs time to react and is not tuned for these extreme situations... Old/dirty fluid may be contributing too. Or the time stopped for a moment during this "near death" experience of yours and it seemed like a few seconds (jsut kidding). ANyways, I don't think it has anything to do with ABS. You can try the same thing without braking - let go off the gas for a second, then step on it again then let go then step again - I bet you'll get a similar result - the tranny will be confused (but don't try to often as this stresses the drivetrain)
