His got stock bulbs I think, and mine I swapped out to have red bulbs. Its hard to notice unless you look at the needles, or the odometer.

Only about 15 bucks shipped. Id recommend the PCP ones if you think your gunna stick with them though.

Steve, to change the bulbs all you have to do is remove the guage cluster, and they're screwed into the back. There's 4 of them, I forget what size. To do this:

1) Remove 2 screws in the top of the guage cluster trim. The bottom has no screws, but 2 clips that are a lil tight to get out.
2) There are 4 more screws holding the guage cluster in place, take those out.
3) Slide out cluster. Tilt backwards and slide out bottom-first. Unplug 3 wire clips in back.

You should see 4 knobs on the back of the cluster, those are the lights.

Small errata..theres five #194 bulbs for the backlight from the factory, but you need to remove one if you decide to install reverse glow gauges.

about the gauges, steve, I did a self-install on mine...so i can give you a pointer or two

so...you can change the bulbs and change the color, but what Milton and I and a lot of others did was we bought aftermarket INDIGLOW GAUGES.

basically you're putting on new gauges, just the plates, and the whole thing glows, the blue comes from the magnetic surface itself, all you do is put that on TOP of the original ones, no need to take out, and then you take off your original bulbs so that they don't shine through, and then there is wire tapping and grounding...

but that's the basic idea...

they are not so expensive, probably 40 bucks including shipping

get them off ebay!

Theres an installation guide here, which I used to install mine

But its ALWAYS down. I never know when to catch it when the page is up, but maybe you can. You can see the first page by googling "solara indiglo installation" and hitting the third link's "cache" button, but it cant get you farther than that.

All the tools u need are a philips head screwdriver, a 10mm (I think) socket wrench, and a solder knife/gun and some solder.

and a 14mm socket wrench (I think) to detach the post from the battery as a safeguard.

indiglo install is EASY

tools:
phillips head screwdriver
30 minutes
gauge overlays
wire STRIPPER not cutter
electrical tape
double sided tape (recommended to hold them on evenly)
patience
COLD ENGINE
a 6 pack since we are all aloholics

BEFORE ATTEMPTING MAKE SURE TO HAVE A NEAR EMPTY TANK. YOUR GONNA THANK ME IN THE END!!!!!!!
also be aware that if you are not familiar w/ car electronics (you dont know your ass from a stereo) this is not for you.
1. its always a good thing to disconnect the neg. terminal of your battery.

2. phillips screw driver. there are two screws at the top of the gauge cluster holding the black plastic on. remove them and pull the plastic surrounding off. be careful as there are clips.

3. from there, there are 4 more phillips screws (one in each corner) remove them and boom the cluster is loose

4. pull out the cluster. there are 3 harnesses. unplug them and the cluster is free. (keep an eye on the brown one that is where you are tapping into.

5. press on the plastic clips to remove the clear plastic cover of your gauge cluster. from there the black plastic trim peice/bezel (the one actually surrounding the guages (looks like 3 HUGE holes where the gauges come through, unclip it an now your ready to install.

6. this can get a little tricky so here we go. choose which gauge you wanna do first in my case the tach, remove the little screws that are holding on the original gauges but dont remove the gauge. first get a dry mount on (w/o double sided tape) bend the overlay slightly(indglos in other words) and fit it around the needle. MAKE SURE THAT THE GAUGES IS NOT TOUCHING THE NEEDLE!! once its on, then reinstall the screws and then ad a little double sided tape to make sure everything is secure.

7. repeat process on either tach or speedo

8. now for the hard one. the gas/temp gauge. there are 4 little screws holding on the original overlay (REMEMBER WE ARE JUST PUTTING A NEW OVERLAY ON NOT REMOVING THE ORIGINALS) here is why you need to have the needle on empty your going to have to move these needles around a bit to manuver around. once you got it on, repeat the rest of process 6.

9. now for wiring. since most indiglos are universal they plug into a harness. you need to find a ground and a powersource.
my ground was right behind the gauges where there was one bolt used on a metal bracket.

10. for the powersource i chose to tap into the headlight switch. when you turn on your headlights then the gauges turn on. this one is on the BROWN PLUG its the last wire (full green) strip a little material around it, and solder if you have a soldering gun. if not just make sure to wrap your positive terminal around it good. seal it up w/ electrical tape.

reconnect the battery and test that your gauges work. if they do continue to put everything back together.

11. ENJOY

now if you were lost during any part of this ( i made it REAL friggin simple) then do Not attempt. any novice should be able to do this in under an hour. it took me 12 minutes.
