Dyno-tune results and problems

Postby xXsolaraXx » Wed Apr 28, 2004 7:51 am

well i finally got my car back and went the next day to get it dyno tuned...very very sad day for me!

1st run- 225 fwhp (the tech said the car was running EXTREMELY LEAN)

he turned the fuel up to 25%

2nd run- 212 fwhp (the tech said he will give it one more try, the car was still running extremely lean)

3rd run- 215 fwhp (still running extremely lean)

now that sucked first of all because it cost me 112 for the tuning. second after talking to the guy i realized i needed to do some fuel work on the car. he told me to get the kenne bell pump setup and said he will charge me 675 for the setup with another dyno tune.

i have read another post on this topic where someone used a product from underdog racing...if i dont wanna replace my injectors right now what is my cheapest route of getting more fuel to the engine?

**by the way this shop is no little shop its theone and only ALAMO AUTOSPORTS...you prob heard of them as beign the first to develop the supercharged/turbo'd MR2. the owner did the dyno tune so i know he knows his shizz. he said once the fuel setup was resolved the car will push AT LEAST 25-30 more fwhp...he said a lean mixture always hurts the car's performance.

any suggestions or help?

How much boost are you running? What engine management are you using? There are other ways of upgrading fuel system just remember that you'll have a hard time with fuel delivery if you choose to go with the stock injectors.

I had RC Engineering test the stock injectors and it flow tested at 230cc and I believe JoeB's stock injectors were 250cc. JoeB has upgraded his to 318cc and has had great results from it. JoeB care to share your thoughts on your fuel system?

You may want to consider getting a Walbro 190ltr fuel pump instead. I believe they sell for $85.

injectors would go hand and hand with the higher flow pump.

perhaps try getting injectors first. but then again you are running higher boost.

Check out camryman.org. Jim@foreignaffairs has posted extensive info on this subject. The guy really knows his crap. His Solara is producing 275hp at the wheel with an auto no less!

Get the URD pump and do the free pressure increase mod. What was the a/f ratio anyways?

Moe, sorry to hear about your troubles. I've really enjoyed watching the progress on your car. The pump you want to consider at URD is this one: http://www.urdusa.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=0027&Category_Code= . That sounds pretty bad. I didn't have that bad a problem before upgrading my fuel system. Jim@ForeignAffairs indicated an issue with fuel delivery to the front rail. My guess is that some cars, not all, experience this problem. I don't know if it is the fuel filter or what. Jim is selling a kit with fuel filter and lines for $200 on CMPL that he says will increase fuel delivery. I've asked several very knowledgable people about the application and pump/injector sizing and came up with exactly what URD is selling. The Walbro 190 pump is a drop in from URD for $90 and you won't find good quality fuel injectors around 310-318cc for a better price.

Running that lean, you might have a problem somewhere and my first guess would be the filter. Asside from that, the way I would procede is just as Eric said, get the pump. Tune it, measure the injector duty cycle, if you are over 80% at full load, get the injectors. Test fuel pressure at the front rail, if pressure drops more than 20%, try the filter and line upgrade from Jim.

I'll also throw in a quick blurb about the SS FTC compared to the Apexi S-AFC-II (at least my layman's understanding). The S-AFC is a simple 2 dimensional fuel management system. You can only control the amount of fuel based on RPM. This is ok for people who tune their cars for race because they are tuning at WOT. Under these conditions, the boost pressure should be constant at a given RPM so fuel can be adjusted accordingly. With the FTC, not only does it give you the ability to pull timing, it also gives you a 3rd dimension for controlling fuel delivery, boost pressure. You'll notice that not every time your engine is at 4000 RPM is your car bossting at 5psi, it depends on the load. It is much more important to adjust fuel depending on the load than it is the RPM. I hope it helps, sorry to ramble. -JoeB
