timing belt snapped this morning

I wouldn't risk going beyond 60k. When timing belt is changed so should the water pump. Too bad we don't have a timing chain like some of the Nissans. They don't have to change theirs till 100k.

it then says the 3.5 liter motor has a timing chain, but nothing about replacing it, just scheduled maintenance.

I know toyota recommends to change the belt at 90k. Thats what they told me also. It might also depend on how you drive. Mine snapped at 110k. I drive my car about 200 mi/day for work. I also beat on my car once in a while...so that might have something to do with why it snapped. Just like everything else, if you drive your car like you stole it majority of the time, then you have to change things more often.

I dont see what your point is? If you drive it hard you haev to change it more often? Yet you had to change it 20k miles past what toyota said?

I remember on my 98 Camry when i took it to a local shop, the guy asked me for the manual to see when it was recommended and he said that in there he found it to be at 90K. I have a 99SE Solara now with 84K and rapidly approaching 90K miles. Do you guys know about how much the timing belt and water pump replacement costs? (approx figures). And, do they usually charge the same on both auto or 5-speed transmission? I know my 60K service was about $130 cheaper on my car because it being a 5-speed. Thanks

i think it depend on the engine, my local mechanic had changed the i4 camry for around $200 without h2o pump, vs nearly $250 or $300 for a v6 solara, both stick shift, but he was complaining about the tighter space on the v6.

I got my timing, a/c, alternator and power steering belt all done at the dealership done in end of May..all for under $300 dollars (for my 1mz).

These aren't Hondas. The timing belt isn't that big of a worry. Just make sure that when it finally is done, that the water pump, tensioners, and all those oil seals are replaced at the same time. An ounce of prevention if worth a pound of the cure and all that.
